What is neurodivergence and how can therapy help?

If you have ADHD, you’ve probably heard some version of:
“Just try harder.”

“Be more organized.”

“Why can’t you just focus?”

And if you’re being honest, you might have internalized some of that, too. At Upstream Mental Health, we take a different approach. We offer ADHD and neurodivergence-affirming therapy in Boston and across Massachusetts (via telehealth) that’s grounded in the belief that you don’t need to change who you are to function more effectively in your life.

We’re not here to “fix your brain.” We’re here to help you understand it, work with it, and build systems that actually fit. ADHD doesn’t always look like hyperactivity or distraction in obvious ways. For many of the people we work with, it shows up as:

  • difficulty starting or finishing tasks (even when you care about them)

  • feeling overwhelmed by where to begin

  • procrastination, forgetfulness, or difficulty focusing

  • cycles of burnout and last-minute urgency

  • time blindness or losing track of time

  • overthinking, perfectionism, or all-or-nothing patterns

  • struggling with organization, planning, or follow-through

  • feeling inconsistent—like you can do things, but not reliably

From the outside, it might look like you’re managing, but internally, it can feel frustrating, exhausting, and sometimes discouraging. We approach ADHD and neurodivergence from a strengths-based, disability justice perspective. That means we don’t pathologize your brain, we don’t expect you to fit into systems that weren’t built for you, and we don’t push one-size-fits-all strategies.

Instead, we ask: What actually works for you—in your context, with your brain?

ADHD comes with real challenges, and it also often comes with creativity, curiosity, adaptability, and deep interest when something clicks. Both can be true!

Upstream’s Approach

At Upstream Mental Health, we offer therapy for ADHD and neurodivergence in Boston and across Massachusetts (via telehealth) for college students, graduate students (including Master’s and Ph.D./doctoral students), adults, and professionals. Many of our clients are navigating high-demand environments that weren’t designed with neurodivergence in mind. Our work is practical, collaborative, and tailored to your specific needs.

In therapy, we might focus on:

  • building realistic systems for organization, time management, and follow-through

  • understanding patterns like avoidance, procrastination, and burnout

  • reducing shame and self-criticism

  • developing strategies that align with your energy, attention, and environment

  • navigating school, work, and daily responsibilities in a more sustainable way

  • strengthening self-compassion and confidence

We integrate evidence-based approaches (e.g., CBT, ACT, DBT), while holding a broader lens that includes identity, environment, and systemic expectations. We also bring a strong commitment to identity-affirming care (including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ clients), understanding how systems impact access, expectations, and mental health, and creating a space where you don’t have to mask or over-explain your experience. We work with neurodivergent clients navigating:

  • School and academics (college, graduate school, deadlines, executive functioning challenges)

  • Work and career (productivity, consistency, workplace expectations, burnout)

  • Life goals and structure (creating routines that actually stick, managing responsibilities)

  • Relationships (communication, emotional regulation, feeling understood)

  • Late diagnosis or self-identification (making sense of your experience through a new lens)

If you’ve spent years feeling like you’re not meeting expectations—your own or others’—it can take a toll. Therapy can be a space to unlearn unhelpful narratives about yourself, understand your patterns without judgment, build systems that feel realistic rather than overwhelming, and feel more consistent and confident. Support can be helpful at any point—especially when you’re trying to figure out what works for you.
